appraisers. Each appraiser also receives an annual certificate of their appraiser activity, summarising their work as
an IDF appraiser. Between June and September 2022, I held a one-to-one appraiser virtual meeting with each appraiser to review their appraiser activity over the last year. The IDF has policies
on Medical Appraisal, Revalidation, and Responding to Concerns, and these have been updated this year. External Quality Assurance is carried out annually by CHKS and Annual Organisation Audits are shared with the Executive Board and sent to NHS England.
We were delighted to be able to run
the 2022/2023 Appraiser Review Workshops face-to-face and it was useful for appraisers to be able to network
in person again. The first part of the training was delivered by Practive and involved forum theatre about having effective difficult conversations. The session used two actors to role play a scenario and the appraisers were able
to suggest different approaches which the actors played out. It was a lively
and engaging session. The second part involved some training by me on areas to consider when reviewing appraisal forms and supporting information and writing comprehensive appraisal summaries as well as an update on new developments of the IDF appraisal system and electronic appraisal form. There were also case study discussions in small groups and
a practice session using the updated internal quality assurance tool. The appraiser review workshop also provided a useful opportunity for the IDF to share guidance for appraisers when reflecting on their role as appraisers in their own appraisals.
On alternate months, the revalidation team hosted optional appraiser drop-
in sessions to give appraisers the opportunity to network and share learning. These were set up during the pandemic when face-to-face appraiser meetings were unable to take place and have continued to provide the opportunity for appraisers to meet. Themes for discussion at the drop-in sessions have included formal patient and colleague feedback, top tips for remote appraisal, and a myth-buster appraisal and revalidation quiz.
In March 2022, we ran our new appraiser training course remotely over one and
a half days with an additional evening session. We were delighted to appoint ten appraisers following this training. In September 2022, we held an evening
face-to-face social for all appraisers to facilitate networking. We plan to train a further cohort of IDF appraisers in 2023/24.
As there is a growing involvement of patients and the public in revalidation, the recently established Responsible Officer Advisory Group (ROAG) with
lay patient representation meets three times per year. The ROAG comprises the RO, Revalidation Director, Revalidation Manager, and lay patient representatives. I am most grateful to our lay patient representatives Peter Ingram and Sarah Edwards for attending training for the role and for all their contributions.
I remain very grateful to the Appraisal Committee for their ongoing support and generosity with their time. The Appraisal Committee meets three times per year and due to the success of the remote format, meetings have continued remotely which has enabled almost full attendance by committee members. The Committee comprises the RO, Revalidation Director, Revalidation Manager, 5 senior appraisers (Samir Alvi, Sally Bell, Rachel Magnall, Sue Stannard and Jeannie Yoon) and the lay patient representatives, Peter Ingram and Sarah Edwards. The Appraisers who sit on the Appraisal Committee kindly reviewed and provided feedback on the updated internal peer review form before it was launched and their input here was much appreciated.
The Revalidation Team continues to work closely with the GMC. We meet three times a year with our GMC Employer Liaison Adviser and can contact him whenever we need clarification or advice. We are most grateful for all the advice during the year. Emily and I represent the IDF at the GMC RO Reference Group meetings. The GMC this year ran a consultation on Good Medical Practice and the IDF provided feedback. This was also discussed at a RO reference group meeting.
As RO, I represent the IDF at various external committee and group meetings. I am a member of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Development Committee, I attend Non Employer Responsible Officers (NERO) group meetings, and
I represent the IDF as an Advisory
Board Member of the Independent Sector Complaints Adjudication Service (ISCAS). In 2022 I attended the GMC conference and the BMA Private Practice Conference. Emily and I also attend
the RCGP Appraisal and Revalidation group meetings and Responsible Officer Network meetings run by NHS England.
It continues to be a real privilege to be the Responsible Officer of the IDF and I look forward to seeing members at future IDF educational events in 2023.
