IDF History

As the UK’s leading independent doctors' organisation, we have recently celebrated our 35th Anniversary.
Learn more about the history of our organisation below

The Independent Doctors Forum was founded in 1989 by a group of like-minded private GPs seeking a collegiate platform to meet, exchange views and discuss new ideas. The concept proved popular and the IDF expanded to include specialist members and a programme of networking, social and educational events was established. The Forum became a Federation in 2009 to more accurately describe its activities.

The IDF has grown in status over the years with an influence that exceeds its actual membership size and we have risen to the challenges faced by independent practice. One of the most significant was the introduction of appraisal and revalidation, so we worked with the GMC to enable the IDF to become a designated body with its own responsible officer. We have also engaged with CQC over many years to enable fair inspection and rating of the independent sector.

The IDF has also lobbied strongly over the years on behalf of private doctors and has influential contacts with many stakeholders, including CQC, GMC, DH, Royal Colleges and insurance companies. We have influenced policy and remain the main source of advice for many agencies seeking information about our sector; we also strive to remain a vibrant and relevant organisation to our members across the UK.
