Event Details

We are delighted to invite you to our Evening Webinar with  Dr Peter Venn, who will be presenting on Insomnia - The correct placing of Daridorexant in the NICE guideline pathway.

Learning objectives:

  • There are 7 categories of sleep disorder laid down in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3 2014)
  • These are:
    o Insomnias
    o Breathing disorders of sleep
    o Disorders of central hypersomnolence
    o Parasomnias
    o Circadian rhythm disorders/sleep-wake disorders
    o Movement disorders in Sleep
    o Miscellaneous

  • Insomnia and breathing disorders of sleep are the most common seen in clinical practice
  • Breathing disorders of sleep are frequently associated with cardiovascular and metabolic comorbidities
  • The incidence of sleep disordered breathing is rising rapidly due to obesity
  • The most common symptom affecting sleep disordered breathing is daytime sleepiness with implications for ability to drive safely
  • The Epworth Sleepiness Scale and STOPBang scores are used to assess risk of having sleep disordered breathing
  • Parasomnias are common in childhood but they may return in adulthood, often precipitated by arousal phenomena
  • Circadian rhythm delay is frequent in youngsters but can be a lifelong problem
  • Restricted sleep and circadian rhythm abnormalities are associated with mental deterioration in later life
  • The most common movement disorder is periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD)
  • PLMD may be associated with Restless Legs Syndrome
  • There is a lack of awareness of sleep disorders in medical practice and the undergraduate curriculum needs to be revised to take this into account
